The Code of Practice on the English language requirement for public sector workers, Part 7 of the Immigration Act 2016, requires that Councils ensure that all candidates applying for customer facing posts must be assessed in order to establish their fluency in English.

The criteria under special knowledge and experience on the job profile which is shown in this advert, outlines what level of fluency you will be expected to demonstrate.  Therefore, it is essential that you provide examples in your application.

We are looking to recruit an exceptional person to be part of Bradford Council’s Refugee Integration Service. This is an exciting opportunity to join a recognised team of housing and support workers, to provide a positive experience for new communities and new arrivals in Bradford.

You will be working  primarily with those who receive positive decisions on their asylum applications and are leaving government provided accommodation, but the service also supports other communities who have settled in Bradford who may be having difficulties navigating services and opportunities in their new home. There will also be the opportunity to work with families who are joining a person in the UK who already has refugee status, and to do work with asylum seekers to help them better integrate into the community prior to decision.

Working alongside housing specialists, you will be helping people access housing, benefits, employment and health support, and move on into education and employment, supporting them to develop any new life skills needed in their new community.

You will have

  • understanding of community integration and practical knowledge of supporting vulnerable people to integrate into the wider community
  • understanding of the immigration and asylum process and the issues affecting asylum seekers particularly after they have received a positive decision
  • experience of supporting people face to face to claim benefits, access housing or move into employment. Training in the latest benefits and housing rules will be provided where necessary.

Applications from people who have lived experience of seeking asylum or being part of a new community are particularly welcome.

Please note, this service is not OIS Registered, and the role does not include the provision of immigration advice.
