Department of Children’s Services

Sensory Service

Habilitation Officer

SO1 – SO2 £25,951 - £30,153 pa

Established

37 hours per week

Based at Margaret McMillan Tower, working across Bradford District

The Code of Practice on the English language requirement for public sector workers, Part 7 of the Immigration Act 2016 requires that Councils ensure that all candidates applying for customer facing posts must be assessed in order to establish their fluency in English.

The criteria under special knowledge and experience on the job profile which is shown in this advert outlines what level of fluency you will be expected to demonstrate.  Therefore, it is essential that you provide examples in your application.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our growing team of specialist Habilitation Officers. This new post has been

created to add capacity, as we strive to deliver an enhanced service to children and young people (CYP) under the

Government agenda of Preparing for Adulthood. We are seeking to appoint a creative, flexible and highly motivated

individual, who can add value to our team and contribute to enhancing the outcomes for CYP with severe vision

 impairment.

You will have considerable experience working with CYP with visual impairment, or special educational needs. You may be specialised in working with a particular age range, but you will need to be able to demonstrate that you can work 0-25, and that you can communicate effectively with a range of significant adults, and settings.

For applicants who have not achieved the PG Dip in Habilitation and Disabilities of Sight (Children and Young People), you will need to meet the entry requirements, and be committed to 2 years of face to face study in London, and distance learning, including a long placement in year 2.

We would also welcome applications from experienced and qualified Habilitation Officers, and ideally you will be on the register of HabVIUK.

The overall aim of the Habilitation Service is to provide programmes of individual training and support to enable these CYP to experience the highest degree of autonomy and independent living, to become confident with their peers, and to become safe. Training and support can also be offered to parents/carers, families, school staff and the child’s peers, helping them to learn more about the mobility and independent living problems experienced by a visually impaired child, and strategies to help alleviate these difficulties.

The postholder will work in partnership with the Senior Habilitation Officer, the Habilitation Officer and the QTVI’s, to deliver a seamless service to all stakeholders.

You will be able to travel independently across the District.
