As part of the Better Start Bradford programme, Bradford Trident is looking to appoint

Communications and engagement manager
£30-37,000, depending on experience, 37 hours per week

Key words: communications, marketing, PR, policy, public affairs, digital, media, charity, community

This is an exciting opportunity for someone with experience in communications and community engagement to progress their career and put their skills to use for a ground-breaking programme working to benefit young children.

About Better Start Bradford:

We believe every one of our children should have the best possible start in life. It’s important for the sake of children and families, and it makes our communities stronger.

Better Start Bradford is a community-led partnership programme working with families to help give children the best possible start in life.  Led by Bradford Trident, we have been funded by the Big Lottery Fund to run the programme over 10 years (we’re now in our second year).

Working with local partners, we aim to leave a lasting legacy of all our children getting off to the best possible start, and families being better supported and heard. We are developing, overseeing and evaluating more than 20 projects that support, inform and engage families that are expecting babies or have children under four, and professionals that work with them.

We’re part of a network of five ‘A Better Start’ programmes around the UK, and we’ll be sharing information and lessons between us and more widely across the country. We hope this new way of working together can be rolled out in other areas too.

About the role:

You will lead the planning, development and implementation of Better Start Bradford’s communications and engagement strategy. You will oversee a broad range of PR, communications, events and partnership activities, positioning BSB as a leading voice for evidence-based support for families during pregnancy and children’s early years. Central to this role is ensuring our local communities are listened to and heard, and their involvement is at the heart of our innovative programme.

Key responsibilities include:

1.      Deliver, and regularly review and develop, our communications and engagement strategies, to support work towards the programme’s strategic aims, engage the community in its development and delivery, raise awareness of our work, and increase our reach in the local area and health, social care and early years sectors.

2.      Develop and manage delivery of an external and internal communications plan, to ensure effective, proactive communication of our work and key messages within the team and with families, partners, professionals, and other relevant stakeholders.

3.      Develop and manage delivery of a family and community engagement plan, to ensure local people, parents especially, are informed, consulted and engaged, to promote participation in our projects and ensure families’ voices and needs are at the heart of our programme’s development.

4.      Manage and oversee effective delivery of BSB’s communications, PR and marketing activity in line with our strategy, including media, social media, print and online communications, and activities supporting relationship management.

5.      Manage and oversee effective delivery of BSB’s engagement activities, including attendance at community events, local drop-in sessions, workshops and consultations, and partnership work with community leaders and groups.

6.      Ensure communications and engagement activities are effectively coordinated and joined up, and delivered in support of wider programme activities and priorities, and in light of our programme priorities and local needs.

7.      Lead the identification of communications and engagement opportunities and threats, and proactively identify appropriate actions to manage and take advantage of them, especially to promote and share the work of BSB with communities and practitioners locally, as well as decision/policy makers locally, nationally beyond.

8.      Develop and embed processes for horizon/environment scanning – capturing intelligence, analysing and reporting, and feeding back to colleagues and partners.

9.      Support the work of the programme director to build relationships with key decision and policy makers and influence systems change, such as through producing briefings, analysing policy documents, and drafting consultation responses.

10.  Lead the work of our Communications Advisory Group.

About you:

You should be experienced in communications and community engagement work, ideally within the charity or public sector, and ambitious about putting your skills to use for an important cause. You should be flexible, respond well in a fast-changing environment, think strategically and be passionate about our work engaging families and helping children to get off to the best start. You will embrace the challenges of partnership working and welcome an opportunity to drive a change in organisational cultures.

You will have:

·         A track record of delivering and overseeing communications, PR and community engagement activities, ideally in a third or public sector environment aiming to affect public attitudes and behaviour

·         A track record of organising events, ideally relating to community consultation and education work

·         Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including translating complex information into accessible and engaging materials, with attention to audience needs and diversity

·         Experience of establishing and maintaining partnerships across sectors and developing influence

·         Experience of managing staff, work plans and budgets to ensure delivery in line with schedules and targets

·         Excellent organisational skills and a demonstrable ability to prioritise a complex workload to meet tight deadlines

·         An ability to think creatively, critically and strategically to ensure our communications and engagement work is delivered effectively, continually improved, and takes advantage of emerging opportunities

·         Attention to detail, with excellent proofreading and editing skills, to ensure published materials meet high standards

·         Political and cultural sensitivity, and an ability to quickly get to grips with the political and social contexts relating to child and family development, health and support

·         Relevant educational qualifications, including a degree or equivalent.

We offer a friendly, fun and lively working environment, with ongoing professional development opportunities to help you develop your career and fulfil your potential.
