The Head of External Affairs is a new role reporting to the Head of Communications & Marketing and this is without doubt a career defining opportunity in which you’ll have the chance to shape, manage and enhance the standing of the Leeds City Region regionally, nationally and internationally.

 

We are seeking a creative, driven and inspiring leader to manage all our external communications and external affairs. We are seeking a candidate who relishes the opportunity to work collaboratively and innovatively, with the ability to influence relationships with a broad range of stakeholders. You’ll also need to have gravitas and credibility to advise chief officers, transport chiefs, business leaders and elected Members.

 

We are looking for an individual with an outstanding track record of delivery gained in media relations, communications and external relations combined with a proven ability to present our messages in a compelling way.

 

You will have a passion for what we do – the transport network we run, the business support we offer and the collaborative single voice we provide for the region - and for promoting the success and the future opportunities within the Leeds City Region and the Combined Authorities delivering on our commitments to our residents and communities.

 

The Head of External Affairs will manage and enhance the standing of the Leeds City Region through the development of external and internal communications, media relations & public affairs channels, policy projects and initiatives. You will ensure that the residents of the Leeds City Region, our national and international target audiences, councillors and partners are able to fully understand and engage with the Combined Authorities’ agenda.

 

You will lead a team that provide an effective Public Relations and Public Affairs support for the Leadership team of the Combined Authority, the LEP and the Metro travel network, whilst working collaboratively across Local Authority partners.

 

 

Key requirements:

 

Proven and successful experience of managing at least one of either communications, external affairs or a policy support service ideally within a complex politically led organization

An understanding of the relevant constraints, risks and trends affecting the City Region and an awareness of how they affect the development and delivery of programmes.

Demonstrate a track record of practical and successful experience of engagement with a wide range of external bodies including local and national media, Central Government departments and agencies, and other relevant regional and national organisations

A proven track record of influencing strategic decision makers.

Experience of strategic planning and decision making at a local and regional level.

Experience of successful project management of complex initiatives in a political environment

 

Experience of leading, managing and developing a high performing team.
