Apprentice Heavy Goods & Motor Vehicle/Plant Mechanics

Starting Band 5 (SCP13)

Age 16/17 - £171.25 per week

2 x 37 hrs per week, Monday to Friday

Based at Shearbridge Depot, BD7 1PU

 

The Fleet Workshop at Shearbridge depot carries out maintenance and repairs to a range of over 660 vehicles and approx 1000 items of plant equipment and other machinery across the whole of the Council. 

 

Fleet & Transport Services wish to recruit 2 x apprentices for the Fleet Workshop to ensure that there is a pipeline of skilled, qualified mechanical fitters to meet the needs of the Workshop succession plan. 

 

We are looking for school leavers who are committed to undertaking an apprenticeship scheme of up to four years duration to gain the necessary skills, experience, competencies and qualifications required of a fully qualified HGV Motor Vehicle and Plant Mechanic in line with National Apprenticeship Service standards i.e. NVQ Level 1, 2 & 3.  

 

You will receive training in all aspects of maintenance and repair, to a range of vehicles, machines and plant equipment, to the required quality standards and will work towards achieving the appropriate skills, competencies and qualifications of the role. Bradford Council will provide you with sufficient time, the working environment and range of job activities within which it is possible for you to complete your full apprenticeship.

 

You will:

  • be committed to undertaking all training and development opportunities provided
  • be compliant with all training and development requirements, including attendance at external training establishments
  • complete all training course work on time and to required deadlines 
  • be literate and numerate to a level to enable you to undertake training in the duties listed in the job specification
  • be reliable, co-operative, flexible and capable of reacting to fast changing circumstances and instructions
  • be an enthusiastic and committed individual, highly motivated in meeting the needs of both the employer and the customer
  • must pass the UK driving test and obtain a standard UK driving licence by the end of the four year apprenticeship - self funded

 

Special Conditions of the Role

  • Physically demanding effort required on specific walking, kneeling, bending, pulling, pushing, lifting and carrying or any other physical attribute required
  • Good hand/eye co-ordination is vital for this role
  • You will work normally within the confines of the depot/workshop but may frequently be required to undertake site and roadside repairs within the BMDC area in all weathers
  • You will be required to attend relevant training courses including residential courses at Manchester College which will involve being away from home for up to 6 weeks a year 

 

Selection Criteria:

 

Stage 1:

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate via their application form the KEY SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE requirements as shown on the Job Profile

 

Stage 2:

Shortlisted candidates must be available on Friday 19th August 2016 to attend Shearbridge depot to undertake an assessment process. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted and provided with further information prior to this date.

 

Stage 3:

Only successful applicants from the assessment centre process will be interviewed
