Bradford Council Department of Health & Well Being is undergoing an exciting period of transformation and change as we implement our vision for wellbeing in Bradford and District – Home First. We have a strong vision for social work which recognises that the service is at the heart of our Home First vision. We have appointed a Principal Social Worker who, reporting to the Strategic Director Health & Well Being, is charged with ensuring that the purpose of our adult social work practice is to uphold human rights with the Mental Capacity Act 2005 at the heart of our social work practice. To further strengthen our social work practice we have also recruited an MCA Lead, a Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards Manager and we are now seeking to appoint Best Interest Assessors or Social Workers who are prepared to undertake BIA training, to help lead on MCA DoLS Code of Practice and associated statutory guidance throughout the service.
With a strong and demonstrable belief that social work is human rights, BIAs will be understanding Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards work which is about protecting Article 5 ECHR rights whilst understanding that it is Article 8 which defines good social work practice. Social Workers within the service will work closely with BIAs, ensuring that we have maximised peoples potential to demonstrate capacity and to exercise choice and control in a variety of different settings. Social Workers will be supported to undertake their BIA training.
BIA applicants will be a qualified, HCPC registered Social Worker or OTs, and have experience of Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, the DoLS Code of Practice and associated statutory guidance. Social Workers will also be registered with HCPC and will demonstrate an advanced commitment to human rights based social work.
